I just called....

First Sunday back at church after two weeks holiday and my mind is buzzing with everything I have heard this morning – from the sermon, prayers and people’s stories – especially people’s stories and updates: all of which I am still trying to digest.

·         A 11 month old baby in hospital for a week with breathing problems

·         Exams success

·         A sister who has died

·         A father who is making good recovery

·         A grandson caught (again) with drugs

·         The safe arrival of new grandchild

·         A husband taken into A & E

·         A mother who was only given two weeks to live – now making excellent recovery

·         Memories from the past that still hurt

·         Frustrations that come with aging

Do you remember the song ‘I just called to say I love you, I just called to say how much I care..’?  In a world with some many different ways to communicate - mobile phone, telephone, email, social network – even face to face – why is it that people still feel so lonely and uncared for?

This morning I was reminded again that if only we spent more time listening to each other, helping each other, caring for each other, encouraging each other, sometimes words are not needed just being there is enough – what a better world this would be.

A song in The Salvation Army songbook written roughly around 1742 by Charles Wesley says these words:-

Help us to help each other, Lord,

Each other’s cross to bear;

Let each his friendly aid afford,

And feel his brother’s care.

Help us to build each other up,

Our little stock improve;

Increase our faith, confirm our hope,

And perfect us in love.

Up into thee, our living head,

Let us in all things grow,

Till thou hast made us free indeed

And spotless here below.
