What were you doing when?

Thanks to Ali at www.chemicalsblog.blogspot.com  for nominating me for this wee meme.

Five events and the opportunity to record the impact they had on you:

Princess Diana's death - 31 August 1997

We (Nigel, Karl & I) were in Dublin visiting my parents who, at that time, were living there. It was our 1st visit to Dublin and so we were looking forward to an enjoyable week - but I remember  that on the Sunday morning as I made my way to bathroom my mother  started shouting up the stairs ‘Diana is dead’.  Firstly, I was shocked that someone just a year older than me had died and in such unnecessary circumstances – secondly, I was angry because it ruined our holiday; every TV programme,  every newspaper, every conversation revolved around Diana as though nothing else was happening in the world. Sounds very harsh I know but that is how I felt.  By the way, we taped the funeral and have never watched it again!!!

Margaret Thatcher's resignation - 22 November 1990

Like you Ali I am not, and never have been, a political being. At the time of Margaret Thatcher’s resignation we were serving with The Salvation Army in Bangladesh and had our political dilemmas to deal with in at that time – so, although, it was a shock to hear the back-biting etc that had taken place to oust her out of office it kinda of got lost in the events we were facing in Bangladesh.

Attack on the twin towers - 11 September 2001
We had not long been back in the country from having lived in Ghana for three years and were just settling into our new home/job at Leigh on Sea.  I remember Nigel phoning from the office and saying ‘put the telly on you’re not going to believe this’.  I don’t remember where Karl was but I know I was on my own in the house watching the events unfold and it was an eerie moment.  The house was quiet, the road outside was unusually quiet and yet in another part of the world so much mayhem was taking place.  I didn’t know what to do so I prayed quietly where I was for all concerned.  Years later at the London Bombings I would be on duty as ‘chaplain’ at the mortuary for those who had lost loved ones and still keep in touch with one family today.

England's World Cup semi final v Germany - 4 July 1990

We were in no-man’s land at the time having just left Paignton and waiting to be able to travel to Ghana to start our new appointment with The Salvation Army.  Football is of no interest to me but I know that my son who, at that time was 12, was glued to the box..  I can’t remember anything else – did we win or lose?

President Kennedy's Assassination - 22 November 1963

I was 1 yr & 7 months so don’t have any recollection of the event!! But obviously have seen footage, film, documentaries regarding the assassination since then and I view it more as an interesting episode in history rather than having a personal effect on me.  I was more horrified at President Nixon being booted out of office and the Watergate scandal – I would have been about 10/11 when that happened and I can’t tell you why either?
